Wanty-Groupe Gobert #DRESSEDBYHEROCK rode for victory in the last stage of the Eneco Tour. Bjorn Leukemans finished second on the Vesten in Geraardsbergen after a day on the attack. Quinziato won the last stage for BMC.

"I am very disappointed because there is only one position that really counts," Leukemans reacted after being beaten.

Wanty-Groupe Gobert was very active in Flanders. Roy Jans was the first to join a break of eleven riders. Bjorn Leukemans easily bridged towards this group together with Georg Preidler and Tim Kerkhof.

“This morning I said that a breakaway would stand a chance to make it to the finish today if BMC were represented," sports director Hilaire Van Der Schueren explained.

“This happened with Quinziato. It was a very strong group. For us it was good that Roy was also part of the break because this meant Bjorn didn't have to work a lot at the front."

In the final Leukemans attacked from the breakaway with Manuel Quinziato and Yves Lampaert on the first ascent of the Muur of Geraardsbergen. In the last lap, at six kilometres from the line, Quinziato attacked again, this time on the Denderoordberg. Leukemans couldn't ride back to the Italian's wheel but on the Vesten he came very close and finished at only a few seconds. The disappointment was huge.

“I could have won here today but I come in second. I maybe should not have been in third position when Quinziato attacked but I also had cramps. I could have maybe attacked sooner on the Vesten to come back to him in the final kilometre but those are all thoughts after the race. I would have loved to win here, naturally, but Quinziato is a strong guy just coming off the Tour de France," Leukemans concluded.

When sports director Van Der Schueren reflects on the performance of his team, he underlines the attacking style of Wanty-Groupe Gobert.

“We are sixth in the team classification of this high profile WorldTour race. We have three riders in the first 30 of the overall. I would have liked to have one rider in the top 15 (Leukemans finished 17th in the end) but we lose it in the time trial. However, we showed the team colours almost every day so I look back upon this race positively," he concludes.

HEROCK TEAM: "Good job en congratulations with the team's second place!"
