DG Sport Compétition in pole position to take the title in the TCR Europe Trophy

It started out as a test, but now it is rapidly becoming a masterpiece! DG Sport Compétition had its first taste of circuit racing this year and is now ideally placed to add a European title to its list of wins, by taking the Opel Astra TCR to its first title.

The TCR Europe Trophy exists out of seven meetings in six different countries (Germany is visited twice, but only one of those meetings can be taken into account for the final championship standings) and was created to promote the interaction between the different national competitions using the same TCR rules. After five meetings, Pierre-Yves Corthals was on top of the pack, leading with 31 points. A number of other drivers - Fred Caprasse, the second driver of the Opel Astra of DG Sport Compétition, is among them - had 25 points. Reasons aplenty then for the team from the Belgian city of Theux to travel to Jerez de la Frontera, for a meeting of the Portuguese TCR championship.

Fred, Pierre-Yves and a small commando of DG Sport Compétition personnel led by Lionel Hansen discovered the Andalusian track during the free practice sessions: "Quick and varied, this is a superb circuit", Pierre-Yves Corthals stated. "The asphalt gives a lot of grip... which means that the tyre degradation is very high. I was confronted with the problem during qualifying: I set my time in my third lap and then the tyres just went. I still had fourth spot on the grid though, and after an excellent start I was chasing Francisco Mora. But in the first corner I saw another driver diving on the inside, blocking his tyres to try and get past. I opened the door, let him fly past, and quickly regained my position afterwards. When I saw that the leader was struggling with brake and tyre problems I increased the pressure. Four laps from the end I was able to overtake him and take the win."

Thanks to the 25 points for that victory, 'Pilou' has made a decisive step towards the title, which will be decided in Hockenheim in October. "The only driver that can still overtake me is... my buddy Fred Caprasse. But he is not planning to go to Germany. Then again, if we could score the double, it would be a great reward for the people of Opel Motorsport, Kissling and DG Sport Compétition, for all the hard work they have done on the Opel Astra. Every time I get behind the wheel I am enjoying myself more and more!"

Fred Caprasse is in a solid second position in the TCR Europe Trophy standings, after an excellent weekend in Andalusia. "It was great", Caprasse smiled. "I was third in qualifying, but then I lost my fastest lap time over a track limits issue. Therefore I had to start from fifth. Just like Pilou the day before, I had a perfect start, and was quickly in third. Then I passed Francisco Abreu to claim second behind the Finn Antti Buri, a position I was able to keep until the chequered flag."

The final meeting of the TCR Europe Trophy takes place in Hockenheim. Against cars and drivers against which they already competed at the Nürburgring, the DG Sport Compétition team has three targets for the season finale: to take the European crown, offer Opel Motorsport and Kissling a home win and get the best possible preparation for final two meetings of the TCR Benelux championship, in Assen and Mettet.
